Periodontics is the branch of dentistry which studies the supporting structures of teeth, known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligaments. Literally taken, it means study of that which is “around the tooth”. Periodontal diseases take on many different forms, but are usually a result of bacterial infection of the gums. Untreated, it often leads to tooth loss and alveolar bone loss. Periodontology also involves the placing of dental implants to replace missing teeth.
Gum Contouring is a surgical procedure where in the gums are shaped by surgical incisions, under local anesthesia to a more esthetically balanced appearance. This is called a simple cosmetic gum lift. The tissue heals very quickly with very little discomfort after the treatment.
